Common makes statements.
Every outing he proves something about himself as artist. Whether it’s how consistent, how talented, or how versatile, Common always leaves a lasting impression with his core audience. Since 1991, we’ve seen “Chi-Town’s Nas” transition from an emcee to a legend with an unrivaled lyrical dexterity. Ever since Common signed on with Kanye West, he has seem invigorated and has been doing considerable damage ever since. Be, Finding Forever, and Ultimate Mind Control have all had respectable record sales and his recent deal with Zune is just the tip of the iceberg as his success is concerned.
Like “Electric Circus”, “Universal Mind Control” is an excursion that exemplifies his ability to be as creative as possible without alienating any of his fans. Though Pharrell handles a chunk of the Production, Mr. DJ’s contributions are far from average and create some of the most memorable moments on the LP.
Ultimate Mind Control Review
1) Universal Mind Control – This song set the pace for the entire LP. It can be described as a very sonically enhanced track that gives tribute to Afrika Bambataa’s Planet Rock. Common’s flow is very energetic and it compliments the production perfectly. This is definitely something that would fill up dance floors worldwide. (5/5)
2) Punch Drunk Love – Common’s flow is like water on this one and the beat is so chill that the nodding of heads could become an epidemic. Although Kanye only appears on the chorus, his presence still gives the song a bit of attitude. “Punch Drunk Love” offers a contrast to that of “U.M.C” because the song isn’t electrically charged frenzy of dance track but it appeals to those in the club who are known to “Two Step” (5/5)
3) Make My Day – Talk about a flashback to the days of California Dreamin’. This is one of those easy-going tracks that can be played countless times on a sunny day due to the beauty of the upbeat melody. This is another dope production, thanks to Mr. DJ of Outkast fame that features the vocals of Cee-Lo, who like always, delivers the goods. (5/5)
4) Sex 4 Suga - This song is definitely be a strip club anthem. Common invokes the spirit of the Jungle Brothers and delivers a verse reminiscent of the early 90’s. The chorus has the seductive appeal that would satisfy This a dope song and it serves it’s purpose (4/5)
5) Announcement – Tribute to Biggie anyone? Common and Pharrell go hard over this track. Both of them recite their verses with Biggie’s one of a kind cadence and the beat is reminiscent of the One More Chance (Remix). This is another one that cause crazy head nods in the club. (4.25/5)
6) Gladiator – This is one my favorite tracks on the album. The song begins with a simple chorus sung by Pharrell but then the beat switches into a banger fit for coliseums. Common gets back to his original no holds bar lyrics of fire and expresses why he is, as the song is titled, a gladiator. (5/5)
7) Changes – This was more like an anthem for the Obama Campaign. The production was filled with “happy sounds” like birds chirping but the message of the song is very pertinent to what’s occurring in our society. Common has always been one for touching on the important issues with his socio-political commentary. (4.75/5)
8) Inhale – I always admired Common’s ability to be introspective. He rides that instrumental wave with ease while he discusses topics that relate to his life and all the things that must be dealt with on the path to success. Fantastic track (5/5)
9) What A World – This is another one of my preferred cuts on the album. Common is assisted by Chester French, a new rock group who is newly signed to Star Trak, on this funked out track. The dope rhymes are complimented by the stellar production. (4.75/5)
10) Everywhere – A fast paced instrumental thrill ride into the future. This has to be one of my top 5 songs on this album. I love Common’s flow on the track and the beat is just ridiculous. (5/5)
This album gets a 4.8 out of 5
