Who is DJ Nadeeah Eshe - A conversation with the House Genres "Rizing Black Sun"

Who is DJ Nadeeah Eshe
A conversation with the House Genre's "Rizing Black Sun"

Who is DJ Nadeeah Eshe is a complex and somewhat simple question all in the same breath. To answer this question please journey with me back in time where the former ''Girl Band" drummer got her first taste of music in a little borough known to the world as Harlem World USA.

Born Monique Winkfield in Harlem World USA, Nadeeah was heavily influenced by the Latin & Jazz movement throughout her wonder years. The Harlem Renaissance has bred Jazz Heavyweights such as Dizzy Gillespie, Charlie Parker, Count Basie, & Charles Mingus to name a few. Nadeeah got most of her Jazz influence first hand from her father from years of hearing him play around the house and listening to his 45 records. Nadeeah states, "As a kid I was always able to pick up instruments and play them by ear. I played the guitar, I played drums, I also played in a female band as well". This Latin and Jazz influence would later resurface in her sound as a future DJ.

As a teen, Nadeeah later got her first taste of the wheels
of steel from her older brother E-man who was also a neighborhood Hip Hop recording artist and DJ. E-man, or Eric to Nadeeah, exposed her to this new genre in the early 80s called House Music which was mostly a mixture of Soul & Disco music then. She was extremely fascinated with this melting pot of sounds and flavors that she ventured further out to some of New York's elite nightspots such as Studio 54, Garage, and to New Jersey's Zanzibar to name a few. Through years of commitment to her craft Nadeeah started to spin on her own at local house parties and venues.

When asked how has House Music influenced the new generation of Hip Hop music, Nadeeah explains, "Yeah Definitely, like Trans Europe Express and Afrika Bambaataa would take a lot of Soul riffs or the break of a record and keep it running back {looping} and that's why the DJ was so important back in the day. If you didn't have a good DJ you couldn't rock a party." She added, "The MC didn't have the technology that we do now to just take a beat an let it ride all night, the DJ had to do it. He had to be precise grab that beat and keep it flowing. A lot of the Soul Riffs that you're hearing today is like a lot of the Disco used in House Music back in the day" Nadeeah credits Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes and Teddy Pendergrass for some of the genres most interesting Soul riffs.

When also asked if the DJ is now irrelevant? She laughs, explaining "Aaaahhhh no...All you gotta do is come to one of my sets and I can prove that. We are definitely relevant. It's our energy that we put through our set. I can play the same exact set as you, but the language of how we speak can be extremely different. You gotta make people understand what you're saying. The DJ is also there to educate."

Nadeeah was asked to take us through a "A Day in the Life of one of DJ Nadeeah Eshe's set", she proceeds to say, "It depends on my moods. Sometimes I like to give you a Lyrical Story, because it's what I'm feeling at that point in my life. It can often romantic, or I may give it to you raw. Not to sound sexual but sometimes I like to BANG YOU OUT...Lol." she adds, "Sometimes people say...WOW you really helped me out, it was as if those lyrics were speaking to me".

Who are some of the House DJs that have influenced your work? "My earlier influences growing up in New York were DJs like DJ Larry Levan from The Garage, DJ David Morales ,
DJ Frankie Knuckles , I was also influenced by clubbing on the New Jersey scene at clubs like Zanzibar." Nadeeahs journey has taken her to the San Francisco's Bay area in which she's lived for quite some time. She also credits the Bay area for adding diversity to her overall sound.

DJ Nadeeah has several new projects on the horizon in which she collaborates with others, one of which is a poet/writer/speaker by the name of Aaron Prince. She credits him for producing an outstanding piece dedicated to her, entitled "Work with CJ". Nadeeah encourages her fans to keep up with her on Twitter as well as her FaceBook Fan Page.
